(4) pulp-detective mentality & rationalisations; the chief part of the piece’s inventiveness lies in these, and also in the specificity of the incidentals - e.g. the fates of the pilfered 2 bottles of vinegar, neon window sign & (especially) handful of napkins. Excellent line delivery on the last (incidentally).

The massive issues with this interpretation doesn’t make attempting another one any easier. In the meantime it is likely best appreciated as a shaggy dog sequence in which the hook is simply the pair’s interactions & skewed

(2) (N’s & R’s) delusional readings of mundane goings-on and working out what these mundane goings-on are; given the third-person narration this might well be a faulty assumption, even allowing for it (3-P narration) being shaded by the leads’ perspectives - nevertheless, it’s hard to resist; as is trying to form these ‘decoded’ bits into something traditionally plot-like. (1) A bizarre one this; in fact “Whatever’s going on?” is a question one of the detectives actually asks about half way through (about, not exactly, which seems appropriate). Given that N & R are like Don Quixote without Sancho Panza, or any of his misdirected nobility, and unfortunately with real badges, the natural hook here - effective no matter how unsuccessful one’s attempt is - is working on the assumption that the odd things taking place in the everyday setting are merely their
